A vertical expansion for an existing forty years old bungalow with a load bearing structure and a split level terrace, in a leafy by-lane of the city of Vadodara. This addition is planned to meet the new and future needs of the two generations living together in the home. The resulting challenge was the seamless…
The split level floor space was used to an advantage in creating a double-height lounge with an open plan kitchen space. A flight of stairs connects the lower level to a central study area and the bedrooms at the upper level. Ancillary spaces such as the store, utility, laundry room, powder room and a small cabin are stacked one above the other by splitting the double height, creating a very compact services zone accessible from both the levels. Ease of access from the ground floor to the terrace is taken care of by installation of an internal capsule elevator.
Integration of the interior spaces within the architectural shell at the time of initial planning could facilitate a precise planning of the various services such as the PHE, MEP, HVAC, LAN etc. leading to a timely and smooth execution during the actual construction.
The double-height volume brings about a sense of ‘wow’ when you enter the lounge. A base color palette of kota stone flooring and white walls lend a certain simplicity and earthiness binding the entire space. This neutral background is offset by the varied hues of wood and colored finishes used within every room.
